Respite care can be a lifesaver to an elderly person’s primary caregiver. Respite care, which is care provided by an alternate individual on a temporary basis, provides the primary caregiver the chance to step away from their duties, take a break, relax, and focus on themselves for a while.
A caregiver has a tremendous amount of responsibility on their shoulders. Not only are they responsible for the livelihood and well-being of their own families, homes, and careers – they are also responsible for the health and well-being of their elderly loved one. This leaves precious little, if any, time for the caregiver themselves.
If the primary caregiver suffers from burnout, it sets off a chain reaction of events. Things do not flow smoothly in either household and chaos runs rampant. Once the caregiver recovers from their meltdown, they are left to pick up the pieces that their breakdown left in its wake. This means ‘double duty’ on top of ‘double duty’ for the caregiver.
Respite care for the elderly can be arranged through an in-home care service provider. A trained caregiver who has been thoroughly educated on the situation will be assigned to provide in-home care services for the senior during the primary caregiver’s absence. The interim care provider will maintain the same level of quality care the senior has been receiving from their primary caregiver. The exchange of duties between caregivers can be a very smooth process, if approached correctly.
Primary care providers aren’t the only ones who can benefit from respite care. Some elderly people enjoy variety in their routine and look forward to meeting and interacting with new people. They can get bored just as easily as we do with mundane things. By being assigned a fill-in care provider, the client is encouraged to interact and socialize on a different level, which has proven to be very beneficial in maintaining and strengthening their communication and social skills.
By utilizing respite care, the primary care provider can rest assured knowing that business will be taken care of in their absence. It is important that the primary care provider realize that their health and well-being is just as important as the health and well-being of those around them and that they, too, have needs that must be met in order to function effectively. Making time for themselves is a lesson that every primary caregiver must learn.
