Reading is a hobby that most people enjoy. It’s an activity that can be both entertaining and educational. For the elderly population, remaining interested in books and learning can be a challenge due to limited vision and/or hearing issues. Keeping the minds of seniors stimulated is very important in warding off a number of maladies common in the elderly, such as depression and dementia. One thing that caregivers and care providers can do to circumvent this is to get their senior clients interested in books, reading, and learning again through a trip to their local library.

The Bala Cynwyd Library in Bala Cynwyd, PA has a number of services that are geared toward patrons with disabilities. The Bala Cynwyd Library has handicapped accessible entrances and restrooms as well as elevators and push button doors. The Bala Cynwyd Library also has large print and audio books for elderly clients with hearing and vision limitations as well as closed captioned DVDs. Delivery of library materials to the home is provided by the Friends of Ludington for patrons who may not be able to come to the library themselves.

The Bala Cynwyd Library also has reading groups and special events that are hosted at the library throughout the year. Aside from the materials for the visually and hearing impaired, the Bala Cynwyd library also offers magazines, books on tape and CD, music CDs, and free Internet and computer access for patrons. Some of the computers are also handicapped accessible. The hours of operation for the Bala Cynwyd Library are as follows:

  • Monday and Tuesday from 10am until 8pm
  • Wednesday and Thursday from noon until 8pm
