Planning weekly outings and field trips for elderly clients is something each caregiver should consider. Because most of our elderly population has some degree of physical or mental limitation, it is difficult for them to go on such outings and travel alone. Having a caregiver accompany them can ensure that the client stays active and interested in their community and surroundings.
In Devon, PA, a caregiver may consider planning an outing to the Jenkins Arboretum. The arboretum is comprised of forty six acres of natural beauty. The arboretum is home to one of Pennsylvania’s largest collection of native plants. Some of the plants found in the arboretum are wildflowers, shrubs, ferns, laurels, and several exotic varieties of rhododendrons. The arboretum also provides a natural habitat for many species of native wildlife – including turtles, foxes, flying squirrels, and over one hundred varieties of birds. All of the plants that thrive in the arboretum are labeled for easy identification on the self-guided walking tour of the gardens. There are maps available in the arboretum’s Education Center for the walking tour.
Jenkins Arboretum offers 1.2mi of paved pathways throughout their gardens and grounds, making them handicapped accessible. This is especially important because the paved pathways allow seniors with limited mobility who employ the use of wheelchairs, canes, or walkers to enjoy the walking tour also. Dogs are not allowed on the grounds of the arboretum, due to the fragile nature of the plants. If a care provider needs accommodations for an elderly client’s service dog, prior permission is required by the arboretum staff.
Throughout the year, Jenkins Arboretum hosts a number of special events. Some of the events include plant sales, plant shows, hands on activities, educational classes and lectures, as well as botanical art classes. Aside from just a day trip to the arboretum with their caregiver, these activities allow seniors to find ongoing programs that they can be a part of. The arboretum is actively seeking volunteers so if a senior is physically able to do so, this may be something they would like to get more information about as well.
Jenkins Arboretum is located at 631 Berwyn Baptist Road in Devon, PA. The arboretum is open every day of the year from 8am until sunset. Admission to the arboretum is free. To plan a trip to the arboretum with their clients, caregivers can call the arboretum’s office at (610) 647-8870 or log on to their website located at
