Care providers in the Gladwyne, PA area who are looking for an interesting location for their next outing with their elderly clients should consider a drive through the Mill Creek Historic District. There is an enormous amount of history within a few short blocks – most of which most people may not be aware of.
The Mill Creek Historic District area was originally settled by Welsh immigrants in the 1680s. John Roberts was one of these Welsh Quaker immigrants. He and his offspring built most of the homes that are still standing in the neighborhood today. These homes are located along a 500 acre tract that Roberts purchased in 1682. Because Roberts was a miller by trade, he also established a number of mills in the area, as well as a general store.
Today, there are five homes that are attributed to John Roberts’ family lineage located in the Mill Creek Historic District. Four of these were built in the mid 1700s, but one of the homes pre-dates the rest, as well as most of the homes in the entire Lower Merion Township. The house, located at 543 Mill Creek Road, was the original residence of John Roberts, which he began constructing in 1683. Aside from the homes, the ruins of three of the original Roberts mills can still be seen in the area.
The Mill Creek Historic District is comprised of several blocks in the town of Gladwyne. The street names that are associated with the district are Conshohocken State, Crosby Brown, Greaves Lane, Maple Hill, Mill Creek, Monk, Old Gulph Road, Righters Mill Road, and Rose Glen. A scenic drive such as this can be a great thing for seniors who may have mobility issues and aren’t able to get around very well to partake in other kinds of outings. Additionally, since the air inside the vehicle is climate controlled, the elderly clients will not get too hot or too cold as they might in an outdoor setting.
In keeping with the eighteenth century theme, care providers and their elderly charges may want to have dinner at The Old Guardhouse Inn. The inn was built in the late 1700s and was a post office, candy factory, soda fountain, meeting hall, a dog boarding home, and a private residence – all before becoming a restaurant in 1949.
