For caregivers of elderly clients who are still able to be physically active, finding activities to keep them engaged and entertained can present a challenge. There’s only so much you can do within the confines of the senior’s home and much of that grows old quickly. Once a caregiver finds something that an elderly client is interested in, they should do their best to see that the senior is able to engage in that activity frequently. Doing so is can be very beneficial for the senior’s mental and physical health and well being.

Many seniors are history buffs. They enjoy reminiscing about the ‘old days’ and recounting the history of local buildings and places. For care providers with clients in the Malvern, PA area, there are ample opportunities for elderly history buffs to pursue their passion. Planning a day trip to see some of the local historical sites is one way that caregivers can mix up the daily routine in a way the seniors will enjoy.

One historic location in Malvern, PA is the Historic Sugartown Village. Sugartown is a living crossroads village that exhibits what life was like in the area for residents in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Sugartown Village is comprised of a number of buildings that have been restored to their original conditions. There are several homes in the area that once belonged to prominent residents of Sugartown. Some of them are the William Garrett House, the Hannah Cheever House, and the Sharpless Worrell House. Other buildings located in Sugarland are the General Store, Book Bindery, and the Fire House. Each of the buildings has original artifacts on display and act as separate mini-museums within the complex. The General Store is especially interesting because it is home to some of the original items that would have been sold in the store during the 18th and 19th centuries as well as the original post office counters.

The price of a guided tour of the Historic Sugartown Village is $5 per person. The tours last about an hour. Caregivers should be advised that, due to the vintage construction of the buildings in Sugartown, handicapped accessibility cannot be assured. Additionally, there is much walking involved on the tour so if a senior has limited mobility issues, a visit to Historic Sugartown Village may not be the best option.
