The Paoli Memorial Grounds is a nearby landmark in the city of Paoli, PA. The site is steeped in Revolutionary War history that many elderly Americans may find interesting. Perhaps their ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War or they are just history buffs in general. A visit to the landmark would make a great afternoon outing for care providers and seniors. Here is some background information on the Paoli Memorial Grounds that caregivers may want to consider when planning a trip with their clients.

The Paoli Memorial Grounds is the site of the Paoli Massacre, a devastating loss to American forces during the American Revolution. In the midnight hours of September 21, 1777, British forces led by General Howe stormed into the sleeping American camp and began assailing the sleeping American troops with bayonets. In all, over 400 American troops were killed, injured, or captured – a small number in comparison to the twenty casulaties suffered on the British side.

Fifty two of the American soldiers where buried on-site in a mass grave measuring 12ft x 20ft. Years later, in 1817, a group of veterans constructed a marble wall around the mass grave and erected a monument, which still stands today. The monument reads: “Sacred to the memory of the patriots who on this spot fell a Sacrifice to British Barbarity during the struggle for American independence on the night of the 20th of September 1777.” The landmark and the surrounding grounds cover forty three acres. It is interesting to note that the Paoli Memorial Grounds is heralded as the most pristine of all Revolutionary War battlefields because it has remained unchanged for over 230 years. Admission is free and the grounds are open daily during daylight hours.

After visiting the Paoli Memorial Grounds, caregivers and their senior clients may want to head six miles up the road to have lunch or dinner at Goose Creek Grill. The restaurant is located in a unique countryside setting, with a patio and fountain overlooking Goose Creek. The restaurant’s specialty is pizza, which is baked fresh in a large brick oven. Some their unique pizza creations are Mushroom Truffle, Shrimp Lejon, and Pesto. Goose Creek Grill’s menu also includes a wide variety of unique salads. Some of their trademark salads are Nicoise, Fried Goat Cheese, and Calamari.
