When we think of field trips, the mind often conjures up images of school children being escorted by their teachers on outings to educational venues. However, field trips aren’t just for school children anymore. More and more care providers are incorporating field trips or other outings into the plan of services being offered to their elderly clients. Such outings can be beneficial in a number of ways. Aside from the obvious fresh air and change of scenery, outings give seniors the opportunity to interact with their surroundings, their community, and other people – which is very important to maintaining social skills during advanced age.
One option for an outing that care providers have in the Randor, PA area is Chanticleer Garden. Chanticleer was once a private estate owned by Christine and Adolph Rosengarten, Sr., a prominent business family in the Radnor, PA area. Their son, Adolph, Jr., left the estate and surrounding garden to the city to be enjoyed by the public upon his death. For this reason, Chanticleer Garden is described as a pleasure garden rather than a typical botanical garden. The garden opened to the public in 1993.
Today, Chanticleer Garden is a sprawling green space filled with thousands of varieties of plant life that have been arranged in athestically appealing sections. There are tens of thousands of bulbs that bloom in the springtime and the adjoining countryside is filled with orchards of fruit and flowering trees. There is a vegetable garden, a cut-flower garden, a woodland garden, and water garden. The gardens are complemented by courtyards filled with walkways, bridges, and abundant benches and chairs for admiring the surroundings. Throughout the year, Chanticleer Garden hosts educational classes and workshops dealing in horticulture and preservation.
All areas of Chanticleer Garden are handicapped accessible, which is great for seniors who have limited mobility or other issues that prevent them from moving around freely. Maps of the garden are available at the Entrance Desk. The garden also has three designated picnic areas so care providers and their elderly clients can pack a lunch to enjoy in the natural surroundings at Chanticleer.
Chanticleer Garden is open from 10am until 5pm Wednesday through Sunday from April through October. From May through August, the garden is open until 8pm on Fridays. Admission is $5 per person, with season passes available for $20 each.
