Providers of elder care wear many hats to get them through their assigned visits with clients. They make be a chef, a confidant, a friend, a cosmetologist, a gardener, or a personal secretary – perhaps even at the same time. This article will offer a glimpse into why the elder care providers are so important in their clients’ lives and the many different roles each one plays.

Friend

All too often, people under elder care find themselves alone in their advanced age. Friends and family have either passed away or are too busy with their own lives to make time for their aged loved ones. Illness or re-location are two other common reasons that seniors become disconnected with their support systems. In many cases, the care provider is the only person that a senior sees on a regular basis.

Advocate

Dealing with legal problems or interpreting complicated information from doctors or bill collectors can be very stressful situations for the elderly. In their confusion, they are sometimes unable to understand what they are being told or unable to remember errands that need to be completed. An elder care provider can oversee situations like this for the client, ensuring that they are resolved in an efficient and satisfactory manner.

Chauffeur

Many of today’s seniors are still very active. There are things that they want to go and do, but, for whatever reason, may be unable to drive themselves or travel alone. A care provider can assist the client in reaching their destination safely and accompany them while they conduct the business at hand. Doctor appointments, dental appointments, hair appointments, and shopping are just a few examples of the places that seniors may need or want to go.

Chef

Most of the elderly population has some sort of issue when it comes to food consumption and/or meal planning. Some may be unable to prepare meals for themselves due to underlying health or mobility issues while others need guidance to adhere to dietary restrictions set forth by their health care providers. A care giver can assure that the client is eating foods that offer proper nutrition and in the correct amounts.

Cosmetologist

Personal care and hygiene is an important factor for everyone – including the elderly population. Due to the constraints of limited mobility or joint pain, seniors may not be able to manage these self-care tasks on their own. Most of them still want their hair styled just so, their make-up to look just right, and to wear their favorite cologne. An elder care giver can help the clients perform these tasks so that their general health and self-esteem do not suffer due to lack of attention to personal hygiene.
